Troop and Group Camping at Pokanoka
Camping is waking up in the morning to a world sparkling with dew. It is
watching the smoke from wood fires, swimming in cool waters, hiking through
trails, playing wide games, laying compass trails and any number of other
outdoor adventures. It’s sketching what you see growing, listening to the
sounds of nature, watching the sun set, singing around the campfire and just
having fun in the out-of-doors with your friends.
|
|
Camping is definitely a means to acquire independence and
self-reliance. It is a way in which we teach taking initiative and accepting
responsibility. As our society has evolved, we have grown less reliant upon
nature and therefore less familiar with it. The need for us to reacquaint
ourselves with the outdoor world becomes particularly critical as more of us
move into suburbs and cities.

Girl Scout Camp Pokanoka is a very special 260 acre property
located near Ottawa, Illinois. It is situated along the banks of the Illinois
River and filled with acres of beautiful hardwood trees. It is the perfect
location for troops and groups to experience the joy of nature in a secure and
natural setting. There are two troop houses that are available during the
winter months, complete with fireplaces and full kitchens. There are two
“TABIN” units and two platform tent sites. A TABIN is part tent and part cabin
and sleeps eight. Each platform tent sleeps four.

Promise Center Usage
The Promise Center was established in 2002 in order to better serve our 10,000
plus membership and the community in which we serve. Troops and groups use the
Center for workshops, meetings, overnights and special events. Adult volunteers use it for
trainings and leader meetings. During the past year, over 6,000 members made
use of their new facility!
In addition to the use by members of Girl Scouts of Trailways Council, the
Promise Center is available to outside organizations. There are three
small meeting rooms and two large meeting rooms that can be opened into one large meeting room that
will seat 200 at tables. Usage fees are determined by hours used and rooms needed.

Click here for a virtual tour of the Promise Center. Troop/Groups wishing to use the Center must fill out a
Promise Center Usage Application. Mail the application and $50 deposit to Girl Scouts of Trailways
Council, Inc.
